History

Northhampton Township was originally settled by English colonists who came with William Penn on his voyage to Pennsylvania. They named it after Northampton, the county town of Northamptonshire, England. Northampton Township was incorporated in 1722.

Geography


According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 26.1 square miles (67.6 sq.km), of which, 25.8 square miles (66.9 sq.km) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 sq.km) of it (1.07%) is water.

    The township is made up of the unincorporated communities and census-designated places of:

  • Rocksville

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there were 39,384 people, 13,014 households, and 10,957 families residing in the township. The population density was 1,524.7 people per square mile (588.7/sq.km). There were 13,138 housing units at an average density of 508.6/sq mi (196.4/sq.km). The racial makeup of the township was 97.01% White, 0.41% African American, 0.04% Native American, 1.80% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.83% of the population.

There were 13,014 households out of which 43.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 76.0% were married couples living together, 6.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 15.8% were non-families. 13.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.01 and the average family size was 3.33.

In the township the population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 28.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.8 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $82,655, and the median income for a family was $91,477. Males had a median income of $60,368 versus $38,969 for females. The per capita income for the township was $33,028. About 1.4% of families and 1.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.7% of those under age 18 and 3.6% of those age 65 or over.

Bucks County


Bucks County is a county located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population was 597,635. A 2004 U.S. Census estimate placed the population at 621,342, making it the fourth most populous county in Pennsylvania, after Philadelphia, Allegheny, and Montgomery counties. The county seat is Doylestown. The suburban county is one of the five core counties in Pennsylvania that make up the Delaware Valley, or Greater Philadelphia metropolitan area.
